The project is located in the village of São Sebastião, which had a rural history until the late 1950’s, when the city of Brasilia was built. The area changed dramatically, and by 1991 there was formal urbanisation, with government aid. With a rise in population, and only low-level employment opportunities for women and girls, there was a need for vocational training. Provision of health, hygiene and nutrition education; training in food-production, sewing, embroidery, hairdressing, manicuring and other personal services; classes in basic literature, human rights, parenting, physical exercise and cultural activities: these are all part of the programme. There are also plans for a micro-factory, producing ready-made clothes, as well as links with advanced courses in e.g. horticulture, pottery and basic business skills. Computer training is also given.
