Nabadji-Civol is an isolated rural community in Eastern Senegal. A project was set up there in 1991 to establish a supply of drinking water and an irrigation system, and raise the agricultural activity from subsistence to a regular income level. A Women’s Social and Community Centre was built, with basic facilities to support future education and income-generation, with provision of some teaching equipment and materials.

The next stages of development involved training in sewing, crop management and storage, fruit tree and vegetable cultivation, and classes in basic literacy, hygiene and health care.

The project was “distance-managed” from Dakar under the overall responsibility of an IFUW member in Paris who visited the project regularly.

This 5-O project was terminated in 2002.

Proper cultivation of the land and crop management are features in the Nabaji-Civoli project in Senegal
